If there's one thing I've come to learn in life, that holds up year after year no matter what else is going on, it's that my sweet tooth is evil. 
Full disclosure, I love sugar. Always have and I probably always will. If I was invited to an 'all you can eat' buffet with a glorious dinner table on your left and a fully stacked dessert table on your right, I would skip dinner and move right to dessert. Have you ever googled "dessert near me"? Oh that sweet heavenly dessert!
Now I know that sugar is bad. Research has found that sugar is more addictive than opioid drugs such as cocaine, and that there can be withdrawal symptoms such as depression and behavioral problems when people try cutting out sugar completely. But if it’s so bad, why is it in every product? Todays diets are full of added sugars like dextrose, sugar alcohols, and high fructose corn syrup.

In fact, there are so many different names for sugar that we often don’t even realize what we’re eating.

Recently a quiz popped up on my Instagram account (Camille) from a well known natural doctor that I follow to help us find out what kind of gut we have. I was curious, and it was so easy I knew I was going to pass this with flying colors! My results were shocking and told me that I have a candida gut and so he recommended the  Candida Diet.

A what kind of gut??

Let’s just say there’s a lot to this, but it all starts as soon as our gut becomes unbalanced by sugar, sugary foods and antibiotics. Supposedly many illnesses and symptoms that plague us today are because of an overgrowth of yeast called Candida Albicans. This fungus among us is suppose to live with us in harmony but because we are so over loaded with sugar in our western diet, our gut is out of balance. Because this peaked my curiosity, I found a book to help me curb my sugar addiction.
The Candida diet is a low-sugar, anti-inflammatory diet that promotes good gut health and eliminates the sugars that feed a Candida overgrowth. It seems interesting. The diet includes non-starchy vegetables, some low sugar fruits, non-glutenous grains, some dairy products, and fermented foods.
By improving your gut health, and restoring the balance of the bacteria and yeast that live inside your body, you can get relief from many sugar symptoms. Candida thrives on diets high in sugar and processed foods. so the more you eat of these foods, the more Candida grows. And what was interesting were the other conditions that you wouldn’t think sweet foods would be linked to like sinus infections, pms, eczema, even auto immune diseases and a lot more.
The more I read, the more I realized that MY SWEET TOOTH IS EVIL. And that explained why I wanted more and more sugar. Why I had to add sugar to my coffee, why I had to get sweetened drinks at Starbucks and why I went to the bakery aisle first as soon as I entered Publix. If you haven’t tried a Publix cake with sweet cream frosting, after one bite you will understand my excitement of having a birthday party monthly for anybody just so I can have a Publix cake!! Yes, I still have a problem, but I'm getting better at it.
So let’s fast forward, it’s been 5 weeks now and I have cut back on sugar immensely. I don’t crave sugar or sugary food and I don’t add it to my daily food or drinks anymore. When we have an over consumption of sugar we can actually change our taste buds making things no longer taste like how we remember them. My taste buds were so damaged from eating too much sugar making all the other foods lack the sweetness causing them to taste bad. Which in turn made good food taste bad. Now that I have cut out sugar, I actually tastes things again. This wasn’t about deprivation but inspiration.
My tastes buds have changed and I now crave nourishing foods. I still drink coffee but I don’t need the sweeteners. When your hooked on sugar, coffee is a dessert but when your back to tasting foods you will love the clean coffee taste. I’m not going to lie, this is a challenge since our food is laden with the bad stuff on every aisle and every restaurant but if you do your research you can find foods and recipes that you will enjoy and you will taste again! There are even healthy food selections out there.

You have to be smart out there in the real world and read the ingredient panels. But if you try something and you think it’s gross, nasty, even bitter, you might have a candida tongue. I was at our local healthy juice cafe yesterday when a first time customer had ordered a smoothie. He took one sip and rudely told the poor girl behind the counter that it was gross. She was trying so hard to fix his order, but we all knew he'll never be happy and that he will probably blow them up on Yelp when he gets to his car. This is where we are today. It's all about sugar.
